The main functions of manganese concern carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and detoxification of free radicals of oxygen. It can replace the magnesium at a plurality of enzymes.

The intestinal absorption of manganese is low (less than 5%). The body contains between 12 and 20 mg of manganese which nearly a third are renewed every day. Tissues rich in mitochondria are also the richest in manganese (liver, kidney, endocrine glands).
