Description

Zinc is involved in the activity of over 200 enzymes. Its physiological impact is the most important in all stages of protein synthesis. He is also involved in the metabolism of polyunsaturated fatty acids. It has an antioxidant role.

The liver plays an important role in the metabolism of zinc, although in the body, zinc is found mainly in the muscles (60%) and bone (30%). Zinc bones is much less mobilized than muscles. The elimination through urine and skin, although small, is also involved in zinc homeostasis.

Intestinal absorption of zinc spends more than 35% for a meal rich in animal protein, 20-30% for average Western meal and less than 15% for a meal rich in plant products and low in meat.

Needs

The 100% value in the RNI Nutrimeter ® is for the intestinal absorption of 20%, and corresponds to 14 mg per day for men and 12 mg per day for a woman.

The additional administration of zinc, outside food, only of interest shown in a deficit confirmed. Safety limits contributions (through supplements) that can be done is 15 to 40 mg per day. The upper limit corresponds to approximately a value in the ANC Nutrimeter ® 300%.
