The only established biological function of iodine in the animal kingdom is linked to its incorporation into the molecular structure of the two thyroid hormone: triiodothyronine and tetra-iodothyronine.

Iodine deficiency leads to various functional abnormalities. The human brain is particularly vulnerable during intrauterine and neonatal period, due to its rapid growth and high demand for thyroid hormones.

The absorption of iodine salts inorganic is mainly gastroduodenal with fecal losses minimal. The iodinated compounds may be absorbed as they are, but with less efficiency.
